Description

PB Byzantine seal of Symeon Ouranos, protovestarches and judge of Opsikion (11th century AD).
Obv: Bust of the Mother of God orans, the medallion of Christ before her. Sigla at left and right: Μ(ήτη)ρ Θ(εο)ῦ. Border of dots.
Rev: Inscription of six lines: + Θ(εοτό)κε β(οήθει) Συμεὼν (πρωτο)βεστάρχῃ (καὶ) κριτῇ τοῦ Ὀψικίου τῷ Οὐραν(ῷ). Border of dots.
Translation: Mother of God, help your servant Symeon Ouranos, protovestarches and judge of Opsikion.
Seals have revealed two Ouranoi from the eleventh century, both named Symeon: Symeon Ouranos, judge (Doaks, BZS.1955.1.3897), and another Symeon Ouranos who is vestarches, kensor, and also judge of Cappadocia (DO Seals 4, no. 43.4). But, our Ouranos is known for the first time as the protovestarches and judge of Opsikion.
