PB Byzantine lead seal. Seal of Alexandros Palaiologos, proedros (1070s-1080s).
Obv: Bust of St. Demetrios, holding a spear with his right hand and resting a shield on the ground with his left. Inscription on either side: …. - Μ|Ι|Τ|Ρ : ὁ [ἅ(γιος) Δη]μήτρ(ιος).
Rev: Inscription of six lines, beginning with a cross: +ΚΕ̅R,Θ,|ΑΛΕΞΑΝ|ΔΡΩΠΡΟΕ|ΔΡΩΤΩ|ΠΑΛΕ.|… : Κύριε βοήθει ᾿Αλεξάνδρῳ προέδρῳ τῷ Παλε[ολόγ(ῳ)]. Border of dots.
The owner of the seal is a certain Alexandros Palaiologos, holding the title of proedros. As evident from his patronym, he is representative of the large family Palaiologos. The second known specimen, with historical importance. Jordanov, Corpus II no. 537; PBW 20105.
