Description

PB Byzantine lead seal. Demetrios, metropolitan of Kyzikos? (11th century)
Obv: Inscription in three lines with decorations above and below: Σ|ΤΕΡΟ|ΘΕΙ : Σῶτερ βοήθει. Border of dots.
Rev: Inscription in three lines with decorations above and below: ΚΥΖΙ|ΚΔΗΜΗ|ΤΡ/ : Κυζίκου Δημητρ(ίῳ). Border of dots.
Of great historical interest. This specimen probably belonged to Demetrios of Kyzikos, who was appointed synkellos in 1029 (Skylitzes, 375) and oikonomos of the Great Church before April 1032 (Ficker, Erlasse, 25). Cf. DO Seals 3, no. 53.4.; Laurent, Corpus, V/1, no. 55 and Oikonomides, Dated Seals, no. 79.
Condition: Near VF.
