Description

Egypt. Alexandria. Trajan, 98-117. Drachm (Bronze, 35.0 mm, 21.11 g). Dated RY 17 (= 113/4). ΑΥΤ ΤΡΑΙΑΝ ϹΕΒ ΓΕΡΜ ΔΑΚΙΚ Laureate bust right, slight drapery. Rev. Biga of winged serpents right, with tails falling into exergue, carrying kalathos with grain ears; L IZ (date) above. Dattari-Savio 1103. RPC III, 4803.4 (this coin illustrates the type). Geissen 648. Emmett 538. Attractive brown patina with some green, areas of roughness. Good Very Fine.

The realistic bust of Trajan on the obverse is austere and imposing. The reverse scene is very similar to the auspicious image of that shown on No. 313 of the collection. It has an original dark brown patina and an exceptional preservation despite some greenish porosity on reverse.
