Description

Egypt. Alexandria. Trajan, 98-117. Drachm (Bronze, 34.77 mm, 21.73 g). Dated RY 16 (= 111/2). ΑΥΤ ΤΡΑΙΑΝ ϹΕΒ ΓΕΡΜ ΔΑΚΙΚ Laureate half-length bust right, with drapery over far shoulder. Rev. Emperor standing in quadriga right, holding eagle-tipped sceptre and branch; above, half-length bust atop eagle(?) left; L IϚ (date) in exergue. Geissen -. Dattari-Savio -. RPC III, 4666.2 var. (bust type, reverse). Emmett 459. Minor porosity. Very Fine. Rare.

Ex Roma Numismatics, 66, 09.01.2020, lot 715.

Uncommon drachm especially as regards the small figure, above the horses heads, unknown to Emmett but perhaps representing the apotheosis of Zeus on the flying eagle greeting the triumphant emperor standing on the quadriga.
