Description

Antoninus Pius (138-161). AE Medallion, possibly "Paduan” after Giovanni Cavino, 1500-1570 AD. Obv. ANTONINVS AVG PIVS P P TR P XVI. Bare head right,. Rev. Emperor seated left on a curule chair, crowned by Victory behind and receiving olive-branch from a female figure standing right; COS IIII in exergue. Cf. Lawrence 55 var.(Roma seated on cuirass, receiving branch from Virtus/COS III). AE. 31.14 g. 39.50 mm. RR. Very rare and attractive. Smoothed. Lightly toned orichalcum surfaces, with brown and green spots. Good VF. The reverse type seems to be loosely copied from a Lucius Verus medallion (cf. Gnecchi 8, pl. 72. 7).
