Greek Italy. Southern Apulia, Tarentum. AR Nomos, c. 281-240 BC. Herakletos, Fi- and Ep- magistrates. Obv. Warrior on horseback right, lance in right hand, shield in left, horse raising left foreleg; ͰΗΡΑΚ/ΛΗΤΟΣ below horse's body; ΦI below horse's head. Rev. Phalantos riding dolphin left, cornucopiae in left arm, [flower in extended right]; EΠ monogram and thymiaterion to right; [Τ]ΑΡΑΣ below. HN Italy 1037; Vlasto 891. AR. 6.43 g. 20.00 mm. Great metal. A superb example, sharply struck, brilliant and lightly toned. EF.
