Greek Italy. Southern Apulia, Tarentum. AR Nomos, 240-228 BC. Obv. Youth, wearing short chiton, holding rein in right hand, left hand on mane, leaning back, on horse leaping right; below, ZΩΠYPIΩN and facing boukranion surmounted by ΣΩ. Rev. Phalanthos, nude, holding hippocamp in extended right hand and cradling trident in left arm, riding dolphin left; to right, head of Silenos left above monogram; T-APAΣ below. HN Italy 1054; Vlasto 940; SNG ANS 1246; SNG Lloyd 225. AR. 6.64 g. 20.00 mm. RR. Very rare and superb. Brilliant, with underlying luster, and lightly toned. Minor areas of slight flatness, otherwise good EF.
