BYZANTINE BRONZE MEDALLION WITH PRAYING SAINT

Ca. AD 800 - 1000 A Byzantine bronze round medallion incised with a stylised bust of a Saint in a praying position. He has spread arms, and is framed with roped decoration. On the back side, there is an incised bust of Christ with greek letters. On each side, two loops can be used to attach the medallion to a chain. Most likely, this medallion was buried with the owner to protect him in the afterlife. For similar see: The Glory of Byzantium, art and culture of the middle Byzantine era, n. inv. 123.
