Lead seal of Peter (ca 12th cent.) A very interesting seal!
Condition: Obv. somewhat trimmed, holed, off-centered sealing, otherwise Very Fine.
Obverse: The busts of two saints (most probably the apostles Peter and Paul), facial, nimbate, blessing by their right hand and holding in their left a scroll (saint Pater) and a book (saint Paul), traces of columnar inscription, all within a dotted border.
Reverse: Inscription in 4 lines, all within a dotted border: [ΓΡΑ]ΦΗC/ΘΕΪΚ(ΗC) Λ(Ο)/[ΓΟ]ΥC ΜΥCΤ(ΟΓΡΑΦΕΙ?)/ΠΕΤΡΟC = Γραφῆς θεϊκῆς λόγους μυστογραφεῖ Πέτρος (Peter writes down the words of Holy Scipture).
A really puzzling seal! Possibly Peter, the owner of the present seal, was a scriptor (copyist) of Holy Scripture texts.
