Description

**Item Description:**

**Era:** Early Roman period, 1st-2nd century AD

**Description:**

This exquisite early Roman unguentarium, crafted from translucent colorless glass, exudes an enchanting charm that transcends time. Its distinctive rim, folded out, over, and in, with an uneven flattened upper surface, adds a touch of rustic beauty to the piece.

The unguentarium's cylindrical neck, with a tooled indent around the base, seamlessly transitions into the piriform body, which leads to a rounded bottom, flat at center. The cylindrical neck and tooled indent suggest that the unguentarium may have been made using the free-blowing technique, where the glassblower shaped the vessel directly from a gathered mass of molten glass.

The unguentarium's colorless glass, showcasing the purity of the material, adds to its timeless elegance and historical authenticity. This simplicity speaks to the craftsmanship and ingenuity of ancient glassmakers, who were able to create vessels with both artistic and functional qualities.

Despite its age and the rustic character of the rim, the unguentarium remains remarkably intact, bearing witness to its resilience and craftsmanship. Free from chips or noticeable repair, the piece attests to the enduring quality of ancient glassware.

This unguentarium, once used to hold precious perfumes, oils, or powders, serves as a tangible link to the ancient world, offering a glimpse into the refined tastes and sophisticated lifestyle of the time. Its captivating form, rustic charm, and remarkable condition make it a true treasure, worthy of adorning any discerning collector's collection.
