Description

Monumental Marble Head of a Greek Philosopher. 1st century B.C.-1st century A.D. Carved in the round bust of a philosopher or a poet with short tousled hair and trimmed beard, exaggerated protruding eyes, the mouth modelled slightly open and teeth within; mounted on a custom-made stand. Cf. Bol, P. C. (Hrsg.), Forschungen zur Villa Albani, Katalog der sntiken Bildwerke, I, Berlin, 1988, Kat, nr. 55, pp.180-184; Richter, G. M. A., The portraits of the Greeks, II, 1965, p. 1065 ff. 47.6 kg total, 60 cm including stand (23 5/8 in.). (For this specific lot, 5% import VAT is applicable on the hammer price.)

Private collection, Paris, 1980s. European private collection. Accompanied by a copy of French passport no.237041. Accompanied by an academic report by Professor Neritan Ceka. This lot has been checked against the Interpol Database of stolen works of art and is accompanied by a search certificate number no.12610-234690. This lot has been cleared against the Art Loss Register database, and is accompanied by an illustrated lot declaration signed by the Head of the Antiquities Department, Dr Raffaele D'Amato.
