Byzantine Inscribed Pilgrim's Ampulla
11th-13th century AD. A lead ampulla in the shape of an amphora with wide neck decorated with raised X, small handle to the shoulder, conical body tapering to a point, the body with enigmatic Greek inscription. 20.4 grams, 53mm (2"). From the collection of a European gentleman living in South London; acquired 1970-1980.
