Description

Circa 2200 B.C.. Pale cream fabric, funicular lower body and broad rounded shoulder, band of painted ornament including ibises, a tiger and hatched panels. Cf. Ghirsman, R., Fouilles de Sialk, pres de Kashan, Paris, 1938; Dani, A.H., Thapar, B.K., ‘The Indus Civilization’ in Unesco Publishing, History of civilizations of Central Asia, Volume I, The dawn of civilization: earliest times to 700 B.C., Paris, 1992, pp.271-307; Satyawadi, S., Proto-Historic Pottery of Indus Valley Civilisation: Study of Painted Motifs, Perspectives in Indian Art and Archaeology vol.2, New Delhi, 1994, pp.113ff. and figs.92,96,100, for similar style of pottery. 2.28 kg, 29 cm wide (11 1/2 in.).

Acquired in the mid 1980s-1990s. Private collection, Switzerland, thence by descent. Private collection, since the late 1990s. Accompanied by an academic report by Dr Raffaele D’Amato. This lot has been checked against the Interpol Database of stolen works of art and is accompanied by search certificate number no.12187-222202.
