English Medieval Coins - Edward IV - Canterbury - Contemporary Forgery Halfgroat
1471-1483 AD. Second reign, contemporary forgery. Obv: facing bust in tressure of nine arcs with reversed ‘C’ on neck with EDW[ ] legend and uncertain (possibly 'rose'?) mintmark. Rev: long cross and pellets dividing outer legend off flan and inner legend CIVI TAS CAN TOR with reversed S in TAS. See S. 2106; see N.1637-1639. 0.94 grams. The appearance of reversed letters on coins of this series is most unusual and this may well be a coin struck from unofficial dies, although the general style of bust and lettering is good.
Near very fine; flan clipped. Very rare.
