Description

Byzantine Stone Bread Stamp
6th-10th century A.D. Rectangular with pierced lug to the reverse; rectangular design with text 'XAPO / ETA'. Cf. similar in the collection of the British Museum under accession no.1875,1012.1, with text also executed dextrograde (not reversed). 80 grams, 66 mm (2 5/8 in.).

From the private collection of the late Mr S.M., London, UK, 1969-1999; thence by descent. The legend should have been written in reverse for a stamp; it may have been a blundered legend by the workman.
