Description

World Coins - Islamic - Abbasid - Al Mahdi - AR Dirham
161 h. / 778 A.D. Madinat al-Salaam mint. Obv: inscription in three lines with legend around. Rev: inscription in four lines with legend around. Wilkes 1,379.2.91 grams. Ex David Harthill collection, UK.[No Reserve] This silver Islamic coin may be a contemporary copy or fake Abbasid dirham produced by a local workshop imitating a coin minted at Madinat al-Salaam. Fakes manufactured during the ancient Abbasid timeline, although inexpensive at auction, present a fascinating area to research for those collecting on a budget. TimeLine Auctions normally has a small quantity of contemporary imitations on offer for those interested in this captivating area of numismatics.
