Visigothic Silver-Gilt 'CMASPRO' Nummular Brooch
5th-6th century A.D. Comprising a round plaque and beaded border; catch to the reverse and pin-lugs with mineralised fabric; inset gilt sheet silver medallion with stylised profile imperial bust, herringbone border and legend 'CMASPRO'. Cf. similar brooch in the collection of the British Museum, London, under reference 1990,0705.1.11 grams, 41 mm (1 1/2 in.). Acquired from a private London collection formed in the early 1990s.Ex private Suffolk, UK, collection.This lot has been checked against the Interpol Database of stolen works of art and is accompanied by searcher certificate no. 200199. The legend 'CMASPRO' may be a bungled attempt to reproduce Roman script.
