Description

Roman Aubergine Glass Vessel with Trails
3rd-5th century A.D. An aubergine glass jar with dimples around the circumference, trumpet-style neck and rim, applied openwork trails around the shoulder; pontil to base; iridescent surfaces. Cf. The Corning Museum of Glass, accession number 53.1.6, for a broadly comparable type; cf. The Metropolitan Museum, accession numbers 74.51.197 and 91.1.1396, for similar types. 64 grams, 68 mm wide (2 5/8 in.). Acquired UK, in the 1980s.Property of a London gentleman.
