English Tudor Coins - Elizabeth I - 1565 'Rose over Pheon' - Sixpence
Dated 1565 A.D. Third to fourth issues. Obv: profile bust with rose behind and ELIZABETH D G ANG FR ET HI REGINA legend and 'rose over pheon' mintmark. Rev: long cross over arms with date above and POSVI DEV ADIVTOREM MEV legend with 'rose' mintmark. S. 2561; N. 1997 3.06 grams total. Ex Young, Lockett, Lingford and Comber collections, with four old collector tickets. With a ticket stating lot 158 in the Glendinings sale of 7 June 1974. Acquired John Newman Coins, UK, with dealer ticket. From a Cambridgeshire, UK, collection. The year 1565 saw both the 'pheon' and the 'rose' mintmarks used; the pheon at the end of the period 1561-1565 and the rose in 1565 only. [No Reserve]
