Chinese Ming Musician Set Ming Dynasty, 1368-1644 A.D. A set of four glazed, polychrome ceramic musicians, each modelled in the round standing on an integral tiered square base and playing a different instrument, wearing cross-over robes and conical hats. Cf. The British Museum, museum number 1938,0524.29, for similar. 1.16 kg total, 17.5-18 cm (6 7/8 - 7 in.). Acquired 1990s. West Country, UK, collection. Such musicians are found in Ming burials at the vanguard of processions and apparently proclaim the arrival of the occupant of the sedan chair. They play a variety of instruments including trumpets, pipes, horns, drums and cymbals, rather than the dulcimers or lutes which could have provided more relaxing entertainment. [4]
