Western Asiatic Cylinder Seal Group 3rd-1st millennium B.C. A mixed group of four stone cylinder seals comprising two jasper, and two limestone; two accompanied by a museum-quality impression and typed and signed scholarly note issued by W.G. Lambert, Professor of Assyriology at the University of Birmingham, 1970-1993, which states: (1) 'Cylinder Seal of Bituminous Stone 24 x 11 mm. The design shows a rearing horned animal before a highly stylised sacred tree. This seal comes from west Iran and dates to c. 1100-900 B.C. It has an interesting design, but it is very worn and the top is missing.' (2) 'Cylinder Seal of Whitish Stone 13 x 10 mm. The design, which is deeply cut, shows two items. The one appears to be a lion with open jaws, the other is uncertain: perhaps a quadruped. This is a rare type of seal, and difficult to classify for certain. There are feint tracnes [sic] of glaze on the surface. Most probably this is from Syria or Anatolia and dates to the first half of the third millennium B.C., c. 3000-2500 B.C. This seal is in fine condition.' 17 grams total, 13-36 mm (1/2 - 1 1/2 in.). Acquired in the late 1980s-early 1990s. Signo collection, property of a West London businessman.
