19th Century - Lead St George Medallion. Late 19th century A.D. Medal commemorating St George. Obv: St George in armour on horseback spearing the dragon with S GEORGIVS EQVITVM PATRONVS legend. Rev: boat with a single bellying sail in a heavy sea with Christ asleep in the bows; a disciple waking him and another praying in the stern with IN TEMPESTATE SECVRITAS legend. Cf. similar but larger example, accession number MEC0201 in National Maritime Museum, London collections. 3.98 grams, 24mm. Acquired Canterbury Auctions. Property of a Kent gentleman. Medallions with this design have been produced to various sizes over time in gold, silver and base metals; it is likely that they were carried as protective amulets, by seafarers in particular.
