George III - 1797 - Cartwheel Twopence Patch Box. 18th century A.D. Georgian patch box formed from a 1797 cartwheel twopence coin with finely threaded obverse lid. For coin see S. 3776. 20.59 grams. Acquired Whitton & Lang Auctions. Property of a Kent gentleman. The practice of making small 'patch' or similar boxes from coins was popular in the 18th-19th century period; the large size of the 1797 cartwheel twopence coins made them especially suited to such use.
Very fine condition; few marks at edge.
