Description

Marcus Aurelius with Lucius Verus - Legion VI Restoration AR Denarius. 168-169 A.D. Rome mint. Obv: ANTONIVS AVGVR III R P C legend with galley left over waves. Rev: ANTONINVS ET VERVS AVG REST legend with legionary eagle between two standards; LEG - VI across fields. RIC 443; BMC 500; RSC Mark Antony 83; Sear 5236. 2.93 grams. Found Bishopstone, Wiltshire, UK, 1997. Property of an Sussex gentleman. This issue restores the famous legionary denarii of Mark Antony struck in 32-31 B.C. and names the Legio VI Farrata, although the reason for it is uncertain; it has been suggested that it celebrates the 200th anniversary of the battle of Actium.
