Description

Victoria - 1862 Die A - Bronze Halfpenny. Dated 1862 A.D. Bronze issue. Obv: profile bust with VICTORIA D G BRITT REG F D legend. Rev: Britannia seated with small die identification letter 'A' to left of lighthouse and HALFPENNY legend; date in exergue. S. 3956; Peck -; Freeman 290A (given rarity 17, estimated 16-50 believed existing). 5.49 grams. Acquired The Coinery Auctions, lot 14, with lot packet. Property of a Kent gentleman. The reverse of the 1862 halfpenny appears with the identifying letters A, B or C to the left of the lighthouse and, much more commonly, without any of these present; the purpose remains uncertain but does serve to identify specific dies.

Fair; sometime cleaned but toning back. Extremely rare.
