Description

Offa - Canterbury / Heaberht - Saltire of Lobes Penny. 765-792 A.D. Light coinage. Obv: long cross on saltire of lobes with +O / FF / AR / EX legend. Rev: short cross and petals with HE / AB / EH / RT legend with rosettes between letter pairs for the moneyer Heaberht at Canterbury mint. S. 904; N. 276/1; Chick 124; Naismith 24. See Portable Antiquities Scheme, reference IOW-7C5124 (this coin) 1.02 grams. Found whilst searching with a metal detector, Isle of Wight, UK, on 25 May 2021. Recorded by Isle of Wight Portable Antiquities Scheme Liaison Officer with reference numbers SZ 44621 and BNG 87365. Recorded with the Portable Antiquities Scheme (PAS) with record number IOW-7C5124, and accompanied by a copy of the PAS report. [No Reserve]

Near very fine; surfaces pitted, flan chipped at edge. Extremely rare; one other recorded by Naismith.
