Description

Prehispanic Protoclassic Terracotta Dog Vessel. 100 B.C.-250 A.D. A Colima culture terracotta vessel formed in the round as a stylised dog standing on conical legs, head modelled with large, oval-shaped eyes, recessed mouth and triangular ears, lentoid-section body with central hump emerging from the back, tail formed as a broad-mouthed opening. Cf. The British Museum, museum number Am1921,0613.1, for similar dated 300 B.C.-300 A.D. 930 grams, 14 cm high (5 1/2 in.) From Colima. From an old Spanish collection. Acquired from Antiquarius antiquities, Nottingham, UK, 1996. Richard Cotterill collection, Nottinghamshire, UK, collection number 3000.130.96. Mellors and Kirk, Nottingham, UK, 2011. Ian Wilkinson collection, Nottinghamshire, UK, formed since 1985. Accompanied by an old typed collector's label to the belly. [No Reserve]
