Medieval Openwork Sceptre Head. c.13th century A.D. A bulbous openwork sceptre or staff terminal decorated with raised pellets, rectangular-section socket to base. Cf. Wheeler, R.E.M. ed., London Museum Catalogues: No.7 Medieval Catalogue, London, 1940, p.23, for similar. 40 grams, 40 mm (1 5/8 in.) Found by John Harrison whilst searching with a metal detector in Lancashire, UK. Described as a pommel in the London Museum Catalogue, this interpretation has been overturned; this class of find is now generally accepted as a sceptre head or staff terminal, possibly used by a member of the clergy.
