A bronze late medieval or Tudor discoid pilgrim's badge, likely representing a charger or platter bearing the head of John the Baptist in raised relief at the centre, bearded and staring with exaggerated staring eyes; integral suspension loop above. 2.31 grams, 25 mm (1 in.) Found Thames foreshore, Greenwich, London, UK. Accompanied by a copy of Portable Antiquities Scheme (PAS) report number LON-BDFC73. Popular belief in this period held that the image of a saint with staring eyes and a menacing appearance afforded better protection against ailments and malice. [No Reserve]
