Description

Eastern Slavic Silver Idol Plaque. 6th-7th century A.D. A flat sheet-silver image of a standing female, anatomical features in repoussé technique, oval face with embossed eyes, mouth and eyebrows, sun style headdress, the body enclosed in a caftan open on the breast and decorated with dots, fastened at the waist with a wide belt, boots shaped as triangles and decorated with dots; two fastening holes for attaching to organic surface. Early 1990s London collection. Acquired on the UK art market. From a private collection, Lancashire, UK. Silver appliques for dresses and garments with female and male images were widespread among the proto-Slavic tribes who inhabited the areas of Northern Caucasus, Black Sea and Northern Balkans at the borders of the Eastern Roman Empire.
