Description

Fossil Hybodus Shark Dorsal Spine. Mesozoic Era, c.250-65 million years B.P. A fossil dorsal spine from the shark Hybodus sp. 27 grams, 13.7 cm long (5 3/8 in.) Tegana Formation, Kem-Kem Basin, K'Sar es Souk Province, Morocco, North Africa. Acquired 1930s-1960s. Palaeontologist R Gledhill collection. The Hybodus shark lived during the Cretaceous period; these spines were attached to the dorsal fins to provide additional support for the animal’s body. This shark is also known as the 'Humped Toothed' shark and was prevalent in shallow marine environments. [No Reserve]
