Elamite Dagger with Wrapped Hilt. c.2500-2400 B.C. A bronze flat-section dagger blade with flanges to rear, widened handle, false guard and short grip with flared finial and wrapped with binding made of petrified bone or organic fibres. See Gernez, G., L’armament en métal au Proche et Moyen-Orient: des origines a 1750 av. J.C., Paris, 2007, fig.2.148, lett.P.9.C, for the type. 203 grams, 33 cm (13 in.) UK private collections, 1990s. Property of a Sussex, UK, teacher. The dagger belongs to the type P 9.C. of Gernez classification. In most cases only the blade and the fitting part have been preserved, but this item exceptionally has preserved its organic grip. According to Gernez, the majority of these daggers come from Susa. A clear context is the Vase à la Cachette (2500-2400 B.C.) from Susa. This context partly explains the ineffective aspect of these daggers, probably also intended for votive use. Another specimen, of the same date, was found at Shahdad (tomb 288). [No Reserve]
