Description

French Artilleryman's Short Sword. 19th century A.D. A model 1831 short sword known as a 'cabbage chopper', composed of a ribbed grip and wide blade. 1.07 kg, 64 cm (25 1/4 in.) Acquired before the early 1970s. Ex London, UK, gallery. Property of a London gentleman. This weapon had its origins in the ancient Roman 'gladius' short sword. In the 19th century it was likely carried by soldiers in the marine artillery and was unlikely to have been used in combat.
