Roman Altar Gemstone in Gold Ring. 1st century A.D. A carnelian intaglio gemstone with image of a fire altar, granules to either side; set into a later gold ring with D-section hoop, angled shoulders and oval bezel. 3.23 grams, 21.80 mm overall, 19.15 mm internal diameter (approximate size British O, USA 7, Europe 14.98, Japan 14) (3/4 in.) London art market, 2000s. Property of an Essex gentleman.
