Description

Roman Socketted Arrowhead and Javelin. c.2nd-3rd century A.D. A pair of iron arrowheads with lentoid-section blades, both leaf-shaped with different profiles and tapering, round-section sockets. Cf. Spasi? Duri?, D., ???? ???????????-The city of Viminacium, (in Serbian), Pozarevac, 2015, fig.12, for the type. 85 grams total, 13.2-15.5 cm long (5 1/4 - 6 1/8 in.) Found near Wetwang, East Yorkshire, UK. Brigantia Antiques, York, UK, 2010. Ian Wilkinson collection, Nottinghamshire, UK, formed since 1985. During the 3rd century, iron arrowheads were the most commonly used type. Sometimes the arrows were poisoned, and to counteract this, Julius Africanus advised the Emperor Alexander to give a drink containing an antidote to the soldiers before the battle. [2, No Reserve]
