Medieval Crucifix Pilgrim's Badge. c.14th century A.D. A pilgrim's badge in the form of a cross, twin loops to each of three arms, Christ nailed to the cross in relief. Cf. Mitchiner, M., Medieval Pilgrim & Secular Badges, London, 1986, p.272, for type. 4.49 grams, 36 mm high (1 3/8 in.) Found Thames spoil, City of London, UK. Similar to a type originating in Italy, brought back to England by pilgrims who travelled to the shrine of Lucca (west of Florence). This badge would have been sewn on to the wearer's garments, rather than pinned. [No Reserve]
