Description

Greek Ring with Priest. 6th-4th century B.C. A bronze ring comprising a thin hoop supporting an oval platform, engraved with an image of a priest or worshipper walking to the left, dressed in a long chiton, his head wrapped in a short bandage or taenia, the right arm raised high and holding a cup, the left arm holding a lighted lantern. Cf. Chadour, A.B., Rings. The Alice and Louis Koch Collection, volume I, Leeds, 1994, items 71-72,77, for type. 2.58 grams, 23.68 mm overall, 20.53 mm internal diameter (approximate size British T, USA 9 1/2, Europe 21.26, Japan 20) (7/8 in.) Early 1990s London collection. Acquired on the UK art market. From a private collection, Lancashire, UK. In ancient times the libation to the gods, using a patera, was the ceremony of pouring of wine, water or essence as an offering to a divinity, other non-earthly entities, or to the dead.
