The handshake, on the reverse of the Crown, represents the Treaty of Waitangi in 1840 between the British authorities and the various rangatira, Maori leaders, of the North Island. Though minted in 1935, the Crown was designed to celebrate the introduction of a dedicated New Zealand currency, in 1933, where previously British and Australian coins had been legal tender.
