Struck during a tumultuous period in papal history, as Pius IX faced increasing pressure from the Italian unification movement. The reverse inscription and imagery symbolically represent the Pope's appeal for divine intervention during these challenging times.
Obv.: PIVS·IX·PON·MAX·AN·XXIII (Pius IX, Supreme Pontiff, Year 23); bust of Pius IX facing right, wearing mozetta with elaborate embroidered stole. Artist's signature "P. SPERAN. F." below.
Rev.: EX·SVRGE·DOMINE·IVDICA·CAVSAM·TVAM (Arise O Lord, and judge thy cause); biblical scene depicting Christ calming the storm on the Sea of Galilee. Three disciples in a boat amid turbulent waves, with Christ seated at the stern. Finely detailed high relief composition. Artist's signature "P. GIROMETTI" in exergue.
