Bronze Medal, 1879. Vienna.
By Carl Radnitzky on the centenary of the 1779 reincorporation of the Banat region (including Temesvár, Torontál, and Krassó counties) back into Hungary proper from direct Habsburg administration. The Banat region had been under separate Austrian military administration since its recovery from the Ottoman Empire in 1718. The reintegration represented a significant territorial and administrative victory for the Hungarian nobility and was one of the final major territorial reorganizations under Maria Theresa's reign.
Obv.: Elegant right-facing bust of Maria Theresa with elaborately coiffed hair and draped dress. Latin legend around: "MARIA THERESIA MAGYARORSZAG KIRALYA" (Maria Theresa Queen of Hungary), dates "MDCCLXXIX - MDCCCLXXIX" (1779-1879). Below the portrait, a series of regional coats of arms representing the reincorporated territories.
Rev.: Allegorical scene depicting a seated female figure representing Hungary on a throne, holding a sword of authority, receiving homage from representatives of the returned Banat territories. Classical column in background symbolizing permanence and stability. Legend reads: "A DELI RÉSZEK A MAGYAR ANYAORSZÁGGAL EGYESÍTÉSE" (The Reunification of the Southern Parts with the Hungarian Motherland).
