William and Mary ascended to the English throne following the Glorious Revolution of 1688, ushering in a transformative period of British history that was pivotal to the nation’s transition into a parliamentary democracy. During their joint reign, the Bank of England was established in 1694 to act as banker to the government, reflecting the evolving financial and political landscape of the era. The Five Guinea piece was, the largest gold denomination of its day.
