Description

NETHERLANDS. Dutch Republic, 1581-1795.
Silver Medal, 1696.
By Renier Arondeaux on the resolution of civil unrest in Amsterdam in 1696.
This medal marks the suppression of the January 1696 unrest. The disturbances began when local morticians, agitated by new funeral regulations including high taxes, stormed through the streets and vandalized several government buildings. The uprising was swiftly crushed by military forces hastily deployed to the city by governing officials. These events inspired numerous nearly identical commemorative medals, crafted by various medallists (including works by Boskam and Dishoecke). Arondeaux created three distinct reverse designs: the first bearing his stamped initial, another featuring his initial cut into the die itself, and a third displaying his complete signature. This version is considered the rarest of the three.
Obv.: MOTOS PRÆSTAT COMPONERE FLVCTVS (translation from Latin: it is better to control the billowing waves, Virgil, Aeneid I, 135) Neptune in biga drawn by seahorses to right; blowing wind to left and right; below floating in crashing waves a nest with kingfishers, one setting off to leave.
Rev.: HALCYONIBUS REDVCTIS / SENATVS AMSTELOD / CIVIBVS SVIS HOC / ANTIQVÆ VIRTVTIS / SPECTAT ÆQ FIDEI / PRÆMIUM LARGITVR (translation from Latin: The Halcyons having returned, the city council of Amsterdam gives its citizens this gift of ancient virtue and wondrous faith); Two nested kingfishers floating on the sea; below date in Roman numerals MDCXCVI; below A. for Arondeaux.
Extremely fine, lustruous prooflike characteristics.
