During the 1706 War of Spanish Succession, 44,000 French troops besieged Turin's citadel, defended by 10,500 Savoy soldiers. The siege lasted from May 14 to September 7, when Prince Eugene and Duke Vittorio Amedeo II's forces drove the French into retreat.
