Struck to celebrate the birth of Napoleon Francis Joseph Charles (known as Napoleon II) on 20 March 1811, at the Tuileries Palace in Paris.
Napoleon II was the disputed Emperor of the French for a few weeks in 1815. He lived a short life in exile in Vienna where he, at the age of 21, caught tuberculosis and died on 22 July 1832. His cousin, Louis-Napoléon Bonaparte, founded the Second French Empire in 1852 and ruled as Emperor Napoleon III.
Obv.: NAPOLEON I GALL IMP ITAL REX ET M LVDOVICA ARCHI AVST; oval-shaped portrait medallions of Napoleon and Marie-Louise facing each other, set within branches of olive (his side) and roses (her side) and over a perched imperial eagle, a lit torch between them and crown above.
