BELGIUM. FLANDERS. Charles II, 1665-1700.
Silver Medal, 1671.
By J. Roettiers, Antwerp, on the construction and completion of the new Slijkeus lock in the Bruges Canal near Ostend and two fortifications on the banks.
A neglected lock between Zwanenhoek and Blankenberge ditch prevented sea water from entering Bruges canal. After consulting Brussels, new locks and fortifications were built, allowing controlled flooding as a defense strategy. Ostend residents celebrated with this medal thanking Charles II.
