★ Exceptionally Rare Solidus of Constantius II ★

ROMAN EMPIRE. Constantius II.
Gold solidus, AD 355-357. Rome.
Obv: FL IVL CONSTANTIVS P F AVG, pearl-diademed, helmeted and cuirassed bust facing slightly right, holding spear and shield decorated with floral pattern topped by star. Rev: GLORIA REIPVBLICAE, Roma, helmeted and draped, seated facing, and Constantinopolis, turreted and draped, seated left, holding sceptre and resting right foot on prow; they support between them a shield inscribed VOT XXX MVLT XXXX in four lines; RSMS(palm) in exergue. Good Extremely Fine; well-centred and lustrous, boasting impressive detail.

Rarity: Exceptionally Rare with this obv. shield design; no other examples found on either CoinArchives or OCRE.
