Description

SWEDEN: POMMERN-WOLGAST. Gustavus Adolphus, posthumous, 1631-32. 4 Taler 1633, Wolgast. 115 g. Ahlström 8 (R); Dav. 272 (Erfurt). Struck to commemorate the departure of Gustav II Adolf's body to Sweden for the funeral, after his death in the battle of Lutzen on 6 December 1632. Before to the crossing back to Sweden his body was kept at the city of Wolgast, during which time the mint at Wolgast struck a number of multiple talers. Mint master Hinrich Martens. Obverse reads GUSTAVUS ADOLPHUS MAGNUS; DEI GRATIA; SUECOR GOTHOR ET VANDALOR REX AUGUSTUS. The King lies in full ornament at the side of the battle field, his soul carried by two angels towards Jehova, bright rays surrounding and extending beyond the holy name in hebrew, between two rays EUGE SERVE FIDELISI ('Well done, faithful servant'). In the background dispersing troops of the Holy Roman Empire, above VEL MORTUUM FUGIUNT ('They fled before him, even after death). // Rev. DUX GLORIOS • PRINC : PIUS : HEROS INVICT : VICTOR INCOMPARAB : TRIUMPH : FELIX & GERM : LIBERATOR : A[nno] 1633. Gustavus Adolphus sits in the Chariot of Triumph, facing left, pulled by three Pegasi while crowned by the personifications of religion and justice, above ET VITA ET MORTE / TRIUMPHO ('In life as in death I triumph'). An attractive, very fine example of this historical piece.
