Description

Domitia. Denario de transición. 38 a.C. Huesca. (Ffc-685). (Acip-1427). Anv.: OSCA. Cabeza barbada a derecha. Rev.: DOM COS ITER IMP. Atributos sacerdotales. Ag. 3,51 g. Rara. EBC/EBC-. Est...1600,00.

Domitius. C. Domitius Calvinus. Denario de transición. 38 a.C. Huesca. (Ffc-685). (Acip-1427). Anv.: OSCA. Cabeza barbada a derecha. Rev.: DOM COS ITER IMP. Atributos sacerdotales. Ag. 3,51 g. Denarius. Light toning and sharply struck on obverse. Rare. Extremely fine/Almost extremely fine. Est...1600,00.

The city of Huesca was the former iberian BoLSKaN. Known as OSCA by the romans, this important city was the capital city of Sertorio, in the Sertorian Wars (80-72 b.C.) and during the augustean period it was named Vrbs Victrix Osca. This beautyful denarius we introduce, is the result of the combination between a indigenous obverse (similar head to iberian denarius of Bolskan native style) and a reverse with latin sacerdotal symbols. Minted in 39 b.C. by Cneo Domicio Calvino with the latin name of Osca, place of issue, this inscription results exceptional, and only another case it´s known on which happens (a quinarius of Lugdunum). These official mints have an extraordinay character, meaning that, they where carried out outside the annual budget approved by the Senate and issued out of Rome. In the reverse, pontifical emblemas (similar to the symbols of the elephant coins issued by Julius Caesar in 49 b.C.) where we see: apex, secures that ends in a wolf´s head, aspergillum and simpulum; with the inscription: DOM(itius) • CO(n)S(ul) • ITER(um) • IMP(erator).
