Toyotomi Hideyoshi (1537-1598) was a Japanese politician of the late "Warring States" period and regarded as the second "Great Unifier" of Japan. It was he who issued the most sumptuous gold coinage in Japanese history, Tensho Oban-kin. Written on it with brush are the denomination (10 Ryo) and the moneyer's name (Goto) along with his symbol. Paulownia Flower Seals are also struck at four places. The Japan in Hideyoshi's time is considered to be the most abundant gold-producing region in the world and he used his political power to summon a great amount of gold from around Japan to produce his famous gold coinage.
